The Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (Director, Prof. Matthias Hediger) is concerned with the structure, function and pharmacology of membrane proteins such as transporters, ion channels and membrane receptors. The main focus is on the biomedical aspects of these membrane proteins and their implications in human diseases.

To strengthen high quality science in the field of membrane transporter research, the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure was established by Matthias A. Hediger in 2009. The overall goal of this interdisciplinary research network is to apply excellence in membrane transporter research to the treatment of human diseases.
